INFORMALITY AND ILLEGAL LOGGING: CASE STUDY OF ILLEGAL LAND CLEARING IN RIAU INDONESIA
Abstract
Deforestation is increasing dramatically due to the illegal logging activities of the economic elites and corrupt politicians that result in forest sustainability. This article analyzes the violation done by PT Merbau Pelalawan Lestari, which since 2016 has been given a verdict over the issue of environmental destruction. Timber obtained from illegal logging that had been exported by this corporation can be categorized into transnational organized crime. This study was conducted using a qualitative explanatory method with the Informality theory approach. Illegal logging and environmental destruction carried out by this corporation could occur due to the weak supervisory function of the relevant agencies and the relationship between PT Merbau Pelalawan Lestari and the forestry government.
